FAQ

Quick answers to the questions collectors ask most. If yours isn't here, drop me a message — I love talking critters.

About the brand

Are Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families the same thing?

Yes — exact same toy line. "Calico Critters" is the North American name, and "Sylvanian Families" is the name used in the UK, Australia, Japan, and most of the rest of the world. Same figures, same factories, same parent company (Epoch). That's why every listing in my shop uses both names — so collectors from anywhere can find what they're looking for.

What are the three "eras" you mention?

  • Tomy era (1987–1998) — the original international distribution era, most sought-after by serious collectors.
  • Flair era (1999–2013) — UK-distributed pieces from when Flair Leisure Products held the license.
  • Epoch era (2013–present) — modern Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters made by the original Japanese parent company.

What do MIB, NIB, HTF, OOAK, NM mean?

  • MIB — Mint in Box (perfect figure, perfect box)
  • NIB — New in Box (still sealed or clearly never removed)
  • NM — Near Mint (excellent with very minor signs of age)
  • HTF — Hard to Find (discontinued or limited release)
  • OOAK — One of a Kind (for custom or unique pieces)

About my shop

Where do your vintage pieces come from?

Most of my vintage Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters come from England — UK estate finds, collector clear-outs, and small auctions. I've built up a UK-import pipeline over the years that gives me access to Tomy-era and Flair-era pieces that almost never appear in North America.

Are your vintage pieces authentic?

Yes. Every piece I sell is authentic Sylvanian Families or Calico Critters — no reproductions, no knock-offs, no relabeled pieces. If a figure is missing original clothing or has a replaced accessory, I'll always note it in the listing.

Do you clean and restore the pieces yourself?

Yes, every single one. I clean each piece by hand with mild soap and a soft brush before it gets photographed. If a piece has flaws I can't fix — yellowing, paint loss, damaged flocking — I describe them honestly in the listing rather than hiding them in the photo angle.

Why are some pieces so expensive?

Vintage Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters from the Tomy and Flair eras are getting harder to find every year. The original UK-exclusive sets, the orange-eyed Treefellow Owls, the complete-with-box Cozy Cottage — these are 30–40 years old and weren't made forever. Collector demand stays high, and many of these pieces appreciate in value over time. I price based on real market data, not wishful thinking.

Shipping and orders

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — I ship worldwide. The UK, Japan, Australia, all of Europe, and beyond. Most of my vintage pieces actually came from overseas in the first place, and a lot of my customers are international collectors. Shipping rates calculate at checkout based on your location.

Will US buyers have to pay tariffs or import fees?

No. Tariffs and import fees on Canada-to-US shipments are included in your order — I cover them on my end. You will not be charged anything extra when your package arrives at your door. This is a real concern for cross-border shoppers right now and I want every US collector to shop with confidence.

How long does shipping take?

  • Canada: 3–7 business days
  • United States: 5–10 business days
  • UK / Europe: 7–14 business days
  • Australia / Japan / Asia: 10–21 business days

I do my best to ship within 1–2 business days of payment. Tracking is included on every shipment.

Do you offer combined shipping?

Yes — if you order multiple items, shipping combines automatically at checkout. If you've placed separate orders and want them shipped together, message me before I ship them and I'll refund the duplicate shipping cost.

What's your return policy?

I want every collector to be happy with their piece. If something arrives damaged or significantly not-as-described, contact me within 14 days and I'll make it right with a refund or replacement. For change-of-mind returns within 30 days, I accept the piece back in its original condition with the buyer covering return shipping. See the full refund policy for details.

For collectors

Can I request a specific piece you don't have listed?

Yes — please do. I keep a quiet wishlist for collectors hunting specific Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters pieces. If you're looking for a particular family, era, or set, message me. I have sources I can ask, and even when I can't get exactly what you want, I can usually point you to who might.

Do you sell replacement parts (clothes, accessories, individual critters)?

Yes. I keep a fully stocked replacement parts collection for parents replacing lost pieces, collectors completing sets, and crafters building custom families. Calico Critters spare clothes, individual critters, miniature food, dollhouse accessories — all brand new, removed-from-box, ready to ship.

Do you do custom sets or themed displays?

I do create custom one-of-a-kind sets — like the Tea Party Custom Set, the Toymaker Set with custom wallpaper, and similar styled pieces. These are OOAK (one of a kind), and once they sell they're gone. Watch the Buildings & Sets collection for new drops, or message me if you have a custom request in mind.

Payment and discounts

What payment methods do you accept?

All major credit cards, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal. International buyers can also use most local payment methods through Shopify's checkout.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes — use code WELCOME10 for 10% off your first order over $25. I also send occasional collector emails with VIP-first-look offers on new vintage pieces before they go public. Message me to be added to the list.

Still have a question?

I read every message myself. Send me a note or DM me on Instagram @calicocrittercorner — happy to help.
